Abstract:

This paper reports on empirical research which is drawn from a two year study as part of the FurtherHigher project.

The paper considers higher education transitions and ‘dual sector’ institutions with a focus on three interrelated levels:  institutions in transition, transitions in institutions, and students’ experience of transition.  Bourdieu’s work is discussed in relation to the three types of transition together with issues such as culture, identity and habitus.

The second part of the paper reports on research at a case study ‘dual sector’ institution undergoing a re-organisation which will see this institution’s further and higher provision being divided into two separate organisations.  The strategic ‘re-positioning’ of this institution is debated in terms of creating a differentiated and stratified system.  Research interviews highlight staff and student opinions and the implications for student transition within the organisation.
