The paper considers some of the main characteristics of higher education programmes provided by further education colleges.  Data includes national statistics to examine patterns between sectors and within individual FECs.  The research also draws on the findings of small-scale studies (questionnaire and interviews) carried out with staff and students in FECs and HEIs.  The study reports the results of comparisons between parallel courses in both FECs and HEIs.
