Research Integrity Conference

The importance of good data management

With increased pressure on universities and researchers to preserve research data for re-use in the future, JISC's Research Integrity Conference will consider the role of universities in safeguarding research integrity and will look into the real issues being faced by universities from a strategic and technical perspective.

Researchers and the institutions that employ them, are increasingly required to preserve the research data they create for re-use over the long term. Failure to do so can lead to breaches in public confidence in research, as recent high profile cases have shown. However, good research data management is not straightforward: it impacts on how researchers work and the research support infrastuctures institutions need to put in place.

This event for senior institutional managers and research leaders will address many of the questions and concerns that are arising over the preservation of research data. For example: what are the legal and policy obligations to share research data? Who has responsibility for what aspects of research data management? What happens when research data is collected and stored across national boundaries? Delegates will hear how different institutions are tackling these and other questions by putting in place strategies and policies for research data management. Advice and guidance, developed by JISC and others, will be presented to help researchers and their institutions understand and meet their responsibilities towards research data.

Aims of the conference

  • To inform senior institutional managers and research directors about the latest developments in the legal and policy requirements to share research data;
  • to inform them about the advice and guidance available from JISC and event partners;
  • to inform JISC and other stakeholders about researchers' and institutions' concerns.

Conference format

The morning and afternoon will both open with a keynote address followed by parallel sessions and the day will close with a panel discussion. Due to the breadth and depth of the issues that surround the subject of Research Integrity, the sessions will be organised under three strands. The morning sessions will present issues and problems and the afternoon sessions will offer advice and guidance as to how these issues can be managed.

Delegates will attend one morning session and one afternoon session. To maximise the benefits of attending, delegates are advised to attend both sessions under one strand.

Conference Strands

The latest developments in researchers' and institutions' legal and ethical obligations to make their data publicly available

The responsibilities of institutions to have in place frameworks and policies for managing their research data and the approach being taken by some institutions

How the integrity of the published record can be maintained through linking research data directly to journal articles.
